Abstract
The three partial structure factors for molten NiBr2 have been determined from measurements made on the D4B diffractometer at the Institut Laue-Langevin of the scattering of neutrons from isotopically enriched samples. In conjunction with earlier studies of molten NiCl2 and NiI2, the results are used to propose a model for the cation structure in nickel halides. The marked dependence of the cation structure on the anion species is discussed in terms of anion size and polarisation effects in molten salts. The results emphasise the importance of ionicity and charge transfer effects in molten salts and the need to take these into account in model interaction potentials. Keywords
