AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN CORTIN AND SOME CARDIAC GLUCOSIDES1

Abstract
Expts. conducted on cats, rats and mice showed that the physiological effects of certain cardiac glucosides resembled those of the hormone of the adrenal cortex. Protection against K poisoning and against convulsive doses of insulin was obtained. Cardiac glucosides when injected into normal animals, lowered the plasma K and protein levels and raised the blood sugar. These effects were previously obtained with potent adrenal cortical hormone. From this similarity in physiological activity and certain chemical considerations, the hormone of the adrenal cortex might be a steroid glycoside.
