Abstract
Some observations on the activation of amino acids, as reflected by the PP-ATP exchange reaction, are presented that are inconsistent with the idea that this system is responsible for the activation of amino acids for protein biosynthesis. Alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and lysine have little or no ability to catalyze the PP-ATP exchange reaction. Experimental evidence is presented suggesting that aminoacetyl adenylates may be the intermediate forms in exchange reactions and may represent the activated amino acids. This publication has 14 references indexed in Scilit:
