Abstract
The Tephritidae is one of the largest families of acalyptrate Diptera, with over 500 genera and about 4000 described species (White and Elson-Harris 1992). Most species attack the seed bearing organs of plants, including soft fruits and flowers. The taxonomy of the Tephritidae, or the true fruit flies, has applications in pest management and plant quarantine, weed biocontrol, and evolutionary biology.
