ESR Study of Mn2+ in α- and β-Mg2P2O7

Abstract
The electron spin resonance of magnesium pyrophosphate (Mg2P2O7) doped with 0.3% manganese pyrophosphate has been studied at room temperature and in the temperature range of 55° to 94°C using a microwave frequency of 35 Gc/sec. The parameters of the spin Hamiltonian and the orientation of the principal axes of the Mn2+ ion were determined in the α phase at room temperature and in the β phase for the temperature range of 64° to 94°C. The spin‐Hamiltonian parameters for Mn2+, assumed to occupy cation sites, are reported for the unique site of the β phase and the two unique sites of the α phase. The principal axes of the spin Hamiltonian of Mn2+ in the α phase were displaced by angles as large as 60° from those in the β phase. The space group of the β phase was determined to be C2/m and that of the α phase confirmed to be B21/c. The phase transformation was found to be reversible and involve the coexistence of both phases from 59° to 63°C.
