Abstract
Vibrational excitation of the CO2 ground state by electron impact through the 2 Pi u resonance between 3 and 5 eV has been studied using an electron-impact spectrometer. Further experimental evidence is obtained on the 'boomerang effect' occurring in the symmetric-stretch vibrational mode of the compound state. A one-dimensional model has been used to describe the observations and the complex symmetric-stretch potential for the linear configuration of the CO2- state has been obtained. Keywords
