Abstract
The charge-state dependence of single-electron-capture and single-electron-loss cross sections for Vq+ (q=18-23) in He at 8.55 MeV amu-1 is investigated. The electron-capture cross sections as a function of q are continuous, with a q3.8+or-0.4 dependence. A pronounced shell effect is observed, however, in the electron-loss cross sections, with an order of magnitude discontinuity of the charge state corresponding to the K shell. These electron-loss cross sections exhibit a q-12+or-1 dependence for L-shell electrons and q-14+or-2 for K-shell electrons. The electron-capture cross sections demonstrate a charge-state dependence nearly midway between the q3 dependence expected for intermediate velocities and the q5 dependence for asymptotically high velocities. The electron-loss cross demonstrate that the charge-state dependence can be very pronounced in the region where a broad maximum of the energy dependence of the electron-loss cross sections is expected. Keywords
