Abstract
A method is described of overcoming the problem, often present in zone refining, of the observation window becoming obscured by evaporation of the specimen. The window is screened from direct deposition, and a mirror front-silvered by evaporation from the molten zone enables the pyrometer to `see' behind the screen. The successful application to zoning niobium and platinum rods in vacuo is described.
