Clinical Studies with Carbomycin

Abstract
CARBOMYCIN, a recent addition to the antibiotic family, is produced by Streptomyces halstedii.1 Studies in vitro and in vivo have shown that the substance is active against gram-positive bacteria but has little or no effect on most pathogenic gram-negative micro-organisms.1 2 3 Early reports indicate that this antibiotic is effective against some gram-positive bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics.2 3 4 Carbomycin is primarily a bacteriostatic agent.2 This report describes our experience in the treatment of 30 patients with bacterial infections caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci, coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus, pneumococci and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.Methods and MaterialsAll patients were young . . .
