Abstract
In the nonpregnant woman the peripheral end of the presacral (hypogastric) nerve was stimulated with condenser discharges for 1-3 min. The contractions of the uterine body and cervix were isometrically recorded by 2 intrauterine balloons each connected with a Sanborn electromanometer. The stimulation of the presacral nerve produces a biphasic response in uterine activity, consisting in a contraction followed by a phase of inhibition. In the follicular phase the inhibitory effect was predominant, while in the luteal phase uterine stimulation was the major effect. The responses of the body and the cervix are qualitatively similar. Keywords
