Abstract
Microbiological assays done on protein-free filtrates of samples of Schuffner''s medium inoculated with L. canicola indicate utilization of arginine, aspartic acid, glycine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, serine and tryptophan by the organism during a 48-hour incubation period. Assays for amino acids done on fresh, sterile Schuffner''s. medium and on sterile Schuffner''s medium after a 48-hour incubation demonstrate a general increase in quantities of several free amino acids upon aging of the medium in the incubator, suggesting a slow breakdown of proteins, proteose and peptones in the medium. The microbiological assay technique employed was more sensitive for analysis of small quantities of amino acids than ascending paper chromatography as indicated by comparing results obtained by the 2 methods. Keywords
