Abstract
A total of 52 sexually mature New Zealand does were thyroidectomized from 1 1/2 hrs. to 12 days after mating and the length of the gestation period noted. An additional 15 animals served as controls. This procedure did not alter the length of the gestation period nor did it alter the histology of the ovaries. After delivery, 14 rabbtis were again mated, successfully terminating a 2d pregnancy within the limits of normal gestation. The rate of O2 consumption was detd. for every animal. No correlation existed between the rate of O2 consumption and the length of the period of pregnancy. A relatively high % of the operated animals either died at delivery or exhibited a paralysis of the hind limbs immediately thereafter. Animals might have suffered parathyroid deficiency since no attempt was made to preserve these glands. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
