Abstract
The roles of line and continuum opacities in laser-heated high-Z plasmas are investigated by comparing the non-LTE simulation with the experiment. The line opacity is found to critically determine mass ablation rate, whereas the continuum opacity determines X-ray transmission only in a high density region. The Bloch-type hydrodynamic model for photoionization gives a more acceptable result than the average ion model. Keywords
