Abstract
The antioxidants DPPD (N, N1-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine), Santoquin (6-ethoxy-2,2,4-trimethyl-l,2-dihydroquinollne) and DBH (2,5-di-tert.-butylhydroquinone) at a level of 0.025% in the diet delayed but did not prevent the onset of muscular dystrophy in guinea pigs fed a highly purified diet deficient in vitamin E and containing no cod liver oil. Alpha-tocopherol acetate was fully protective. It appears that the delay of onset of dystrophy induced by these antioxidants is not due to protection of residual traces of vitamin E in the diet but rather to a sparing effect of these antioxidants on vitamin E in the tissues. Keywords
