Abstract
The performance of a hot-wire thermal diffusion column is discussed. The role of spacers used for centering the hot wire has been investigated experimentally for a glass column of 9-mm i.d. cold wall, and hot wall 20-mil tungsten wire; the results suggest that the maximum separation is obtained when the spacers (20-mil nickel wire) are installed every 70 cm along the hot wire. The separation falls when the spacers come either closer together or farther apart. An explanation of this optimum dependence of separation on spacer distance is advanced. Keywords
