Abstract
For centuries before the function of the endocrine system was realized, the term cretinism had been used to designate individuals of a characteristic appearance suffering from dwarfism and imbecility. Much later it was recognized that the patho-physiological basis of this condition was congenital failure of thyroid function.Keywords
