Abstract
The analogy between a vortex line and a stretched string is examined by considering the equation of motion of an elastic filament surrounded with circulating irrotational fluid. A generalization to filaments with discontinuities in density provides a model of an impurity trapped on a vortex line. The corresponding long-wavelength reflection probability reproduces that found previously. Keywords
