Abstract
Management of critically ill patients often involves nutrition support in the form of enteral or parenteral feeding. Knowing when to initiate feeding and how to calculate a patient's protein and calorie requirements is key to obtaining optimal results. Dr Edes offers guidelines for providing proper nutrition support, discusses the use of indirect calorimetry, and explains the metabolic processes of starvation and catabolism.
