Abstract
Xylose malabsorption was evident in a group of 149 asymptomatic East Pakistani male children as early as the 2nd half year of life. The data suggest that the malabsorption syndrome was environmentally acquired since the absorption levels of East Pakistanis who were less than 6 months old approximated those of normal American infants of the same age. Xylose malabsorption was associated with growth retardation, increased incidence of severe weanling diarrhea, and increased incidence of live-born sibling death. Keywords
