Abstract
The sensitivity of a gauge using single scattering of electrons is calculated, as well as the pressure range where it can usefully be employed. For a primary electron beam of between 30 and 100 kev and 100 μa, the calculated pressure range is found to cover about 12 orders of magnitude with a low limit of approximately 10−13 torr dependent on the geometry of the gauge. For beta rays, the useful range is less and the lower limit is likely to be near 10−6 torr. The upper limit of the gauge will be more than one atmosphere if multiple scattering and attenuation are also utilized, no change in gauge structure being necessary. If applied practically as an altimeter in the free atmosphere, the gauge with beta source would give a continuous record of density up to about 100 miles. Keywords
