Abstract
Lysis of collagen fibers in mesenteries cultured with explants of gingival tissue occurred around degranulating mast cells and their dispersed granules. The mast cell effect was not destroyed by heating the mesentery and was augmented by heparin and vitamin A. Mast cells may function in the control of tissue collagen breakdown through release of an enzyme activator.
