Invasion by Shigella sonnei of Tissues of Mice Following Gavage with Viable Shigella.

Abstract
S. sonnei when given by gavage to white mice invaded beyond the walls of the gastro-intestinal tract, and were found within 5 to 30 min. in cultures of spleen, liver, kidneys, central mesenteric glands, lungs and heart of the majority of mice; and were seldom cultured from these organs 2 hrs. after gavage. Shigellae were found most often in cultures of central mesenteric glands and least often in tail blood.
