Cholesterol metabolism

Abstract
Rats were fed on synthetic diets containing cholesterol in the presence of arachis oil, beef dripping and triolein. Cholesterol was also fed with a fat-free diet. Cholesterol is absorbed irrespective of the type of fat fed; it is not absorbed on a fat-free diet. Recovery is complete on the fat-free diet but only 70-80% on the fat-containing diets. A lipoid balance sheet of the faecal excretion apparently indicates that cholesterol metabolism is bound up with an increase of fatty acids in the faeces. The amt. of cholesterol missing is approximately equal in amt. to the acids recovered.
