Temporal Bone Findings in Trisomy 18 Syndrome

Abstract
A histopathological study was made of two temporal bones from a girl with trisomy 18 syndrome. She had bilateral stenosis of the external auditory canal, a distorted tympanic membrane, as well as multiple ossicular anomalies, absence of the stapedial tendon, absence of the pyramidal eminence, incomplete facial canal, and an abnormal course of the facial and chorda tympani nerves. These are anomalies mainly related to the second branchial arch. In addition, there was absence of the crista in the superior semicircular canal, a flattened crista in the horizontal canal, and absence of portions of the superior and horizontal canals.
