FACTORS INFLUENCING THE EXCRETION OF UROGASTRONE

Abstract
The output of urogastrone (on a kg.-hr. basis) was investigated under various conditions in 11 series of expts. on a number of canine and human subjects. The urogastrone was extracted from pooled urine and assayed for its ability to inhibit the gastric secretory response of pouch dogs to histamine. Removal of the entire small intestine reduced the output, whereas a control operation increased it. The output was augmented by feeding either a high or low fat diet. Peptic ulcer patients excreted less urogastrone than normal subjects. These results suggest the importance of the gastro-intestinal tract for the regulation of urogastrone excretion, but do not support the view that urogastrone is identical with enterogastrone, the gastric inhibitory hormone formed by the mucosa of the small intestine.
