Abstract
Three groups of hamsters, distributed according to sex and littermates, were fed a caries-producing diet containing 15%, 30%, and 45% sucrose. Although the 45% dietary sugar level was associated with more caries than the 30 or 15% levels, no significant difference was found between the groups. A definite sex difference in regard to caries (more in males) was shown to exist in these animals and hence the grouping of the 2 sexes for mathematical purposes should not be encouraged. A simplified method for scoring of hamster caries is offered in which only the occlusal area affected is considered for evaluating caries experience. Keywords
