ON THE AMYLOID-CONGO RED COMPLEX IN HISTOLOGICAL SECTIONS AND THE GENESIS OF THE AMYLOID SUBSTANCE

Abstract
On the basis of the reaction of amyloid substance to Congo reri, the patho-physiological process in amyloid formation is divided into 3 phases: (1) an initial phase which is characterized by isotropy; (2) a progressive phase with increasing anisotropy due to the specific affinity of amyloid to Congo red; (3) a reparative phase with fibrosis, showing the max. of double refraction and dichroism, occasionally being superseded, in the final stages, by a clear-cut hyalinization. The precipitation of amyloid is almost certainly a very complicated process in which a diphasic mechanism can be distinguished, namely (1) formation of a substance resembling amyloid in the cytoplasm, and (2) a more or less pronounced hyperglobulinemia.
