Abstract
The free amino acid content of healthy and chlorotic leaves was studied. Iron-deficient chlorotic leaves contained enhanced amounts of free amino acids, even when the iron deficiency was induced by heavy metals or was due to genetical causes. In iron-toxicity chlorosis, however, the content of free amino acids was not very different from that of healthy leaves. It would appear that the free amino acid content of leaves depends upon their iron status, as reflected by the phosphorus:iron ratio. Keywords
