Abstract
Platelet samples from the blood of healthy men, women, and children, hemophiliacs, and a patient with thrombopenic purpura (following splenectomy) were collected and analyzed by microgasometric methods for total lipid, total phospholipid, cephalin, free cholesterol and cholesterol esters, neutral fat, and N. Avg. lipid values (% dry wt.) for platelets of 25 adults were: total lipid, 16; phospholipid, 12; free cholesterol, 2; cholesterol esters, 1; neutral fat, 1. Cephalin composed 68% of the total phospholipid. A composite platelet sample from 9 normal children showed less phospholipid. The platelets of 12 hemophiliacs appeared to possess normal amts. of the lipid constituents. The platelets secured from a patient with thrombopenic purpura, during the stimulated phase following splenectomy, exhibited normal proportions of lipids. Similarities were found in the lipid composition of human platelets, leukocytes, erythrocytes, and stroma. Keywords
