The effect of etretinate compared with different regimens of PUVA in the treatment of persistent palmoplantar pustulosis

Abstract
Patients with persistent palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) of long duration were treated with either etretinate or 1 of 3 PUVA [psoralen plus UV-A] regimens. PUVA was given either with oral methoxsalen (13 cases), with a 1% methoxsalen cream (33 cases) or with trioxsalen baths (18 cases). Twenty patients were treated with etretinate. Patients were assessed every 4th week. A mean score for each group was calculated at each visit based on erythema, desquamation, induration and pustulation. The number of pustules was calculated at each visit. After 12 wk, 4 of 28 patients treated with local methoxsalen and 14 of 17 patients with etritinate had completely cleared. At this stage no patient treated with local trioxsalen or oral methoxsalen showed complete clearance.
