THE RELATION BETWEEN CARBOHYDRATE AND ß-HYDROXYBUTYRIC ACID UTILIZATION BY THE HEART-LUNG PREPARATION

Abstract
Data obtained in studies in which the amt. of circulating carbohydrate was varied by adding or removing (by yeast fermentation) carbohydrate indicate that there is no positive correlation between the utilization of carbohydrates and of ketone bodies by the heart-lung prep. The "keto-lytic" ratios obtained varied from 0.2 to 00. Carbohydrate is probably used preferentially by the heart; when ketone bodies are also made available, a competition between the 2 probably occurs. The action of glucose in ketosis is attributed not to ketolysis, but to its antiketogenic or fat-sparing effect.
