Studies of Excretion of Androst-16-en-3α-ol

Abstract
The excretion of androst-16-en-3α-ol was found to average 0.95 mg/24 hr for adult males and 0.42 for adult females. Excretion was negligible in prepubertal children and variable in adolescent subjects. No increase in urinary content was found after administration of testosterone to adult males; there appeared to be a slight decrease after 3 days' administration of testosterone. There was a definite increase in excretion following both gonadotropin and corticotropin administration. It was concluded that androstenol excretion may reflect steroid production but not exclusively gonadal activity.
