Relationship Between Endogenous Antidiuretic Hormone Activity and ACTH Release in Man

Abstract
The hypothesis that ADH is the neurohormone responsible for ACTH release has been examined in normal human subjects by simultaneous determination of urine osmolality and plasma hydrocortisone concentration in various test situations (fluid deprivation, hypertonic saline infusion, nicotine and insulin injection, and hand immersion in ice water). Clear-cut examples of ADH secretion unaccompanied by ACTH release and, conversely, ACTH release unassociated with ADH activity have been demonstrated. Observations fail to support the concept that endogenous ADH release stimulates the release of ACTH.
