Influences of metabolic-effective agents on nucleotide systems in ocular tissues

Abstract
Total ATPase activity and ATPase activity in the presence of low Na+-K+ and ouabain or ouabain alone were measured in fresh intact cell suspensions of ciliary process, iris, ciliary muscle, cornea and lens-capsule epithelium. Inhibition of total ATPase took place in all tissues but lens when ouabain had been applied topically, and inhibition took place in all tissues when ouabain was added directly to the incubation medium. Incubations with media containing cyclic AMP, theophylline, or vasopressin showed little or no effect on total ATPase activity. These drugs generally lessened the effect of ouabain or ouabain plus low Na+-K+ on total ATPase.
