Cooperative Energy Transfer from Yb3+ to Tb3+ in YF3

Abstract
The transfer of energy from YbF522 to TbD45 by the cooperative action of two Yb3+ ions has been observed in YF3. The correlation between the TbD45 intensity and the YbF522 and TbD45 lifetimes as a function of Tb concentration supports the conclusion that cooperative transfer has taken place. At an exciting (9300 Å) intensity of 1 W cm2 the emitted TbD45 (4900, 5460, 5850, and 6200 Å) power from a thin layer of powdered material was 0.8×106 W cm2.
