Abstract
Orally 5 HTP [hydroxytryptophan] significantly decreased serum TSH [thyreostimulin, thyrotropin] levels in 8 patients with primary non-treated hypothyroidism, but not in 5 normal subjects. Serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels did not change, and serum PRL [prolactin] did not increase in the 2 groups. These results indicate a possible inhibitory action of 5 HT [serotonin] on TSH regulation. Action of 5 HT on PRL was not defined.
