Experimental Comparison of CP Violation in K¯0π+π and K0π+π Decays

Abstract
The time distributions of the decays K0π+π and K¯0π+π are directly compared in the same apparatus. K0 (K¯0) mesons were produced by charge exchange of K+ (K) in a carbon target. Wire spark chambers with magnetostrictive readout were used to detect the decays. The observation of the difference in the decay distributions of K0 and K¯0 mesons serves as a direct proof, independent of any theoretical conventions, that CP is violated. No significant deviation from the presently accepted theoretical formalism of CP violation was found. The values of the CP-violating parameters for K0 and K¯0 decays are compared.
