Surface acoustic wave propagation in paramagnets and ferromagnets

Abstract
Experimental results on SAW propagation in paramagnets and ferromagnets are presented. In the paramagnetic phase of CeAl2 we found crystal field effects on the SAW velocity. A magnetic field has a drastic effect on the SAW velocity depending on magnetic field and propagation direction. Interference effects between normal modes of SAW have been observed and quantitatively interpreted. In ferromagnetic nickel we observed strong domain wall‐stress effects in SAW propagation at low temperatures.
