Abstract
A general method is presented to evaluate the contact stresses and the contact area from the full field photoelastic data. The procedure utilizes the least squares technique in conjection with the Newton-Raphson method to solve the stress field equations for a Hertz type contact stress problem with or without friction. Keywords
