Abstract
Magnetic and constitutional data have been established for a series of alloys in the gadolinium-iron system, ranging from 2–98% Fe. Seven intermetallic compounds have been found and some correlation has been derived between their crystal structures and magnetic properties. The cubic compound has been found to exhibit highest magnetization values of the intermetallics and comparison of data on the Gd-Co and Gd-Ni compounds suggests that presence of the 2:3 structure (not found in the Gd-Ni system) is necessary for the development of ferromagnetism in these systems.
