Frame synchronization for spontaneous transmission

Abstract
A novel technique for frame synchronization that takes advantage of the information buried in the preamble preceding the actual data frame is described. This technique can not only be applied to uncoded data, but it is extremely efficient when used in conjunction with a convolutional code and Viterbi-decoding. In this case the error-correcting capabilities of the code affect not only the actual data but also the synchronizer (coded synchronizer). A class of convolutional codes that allow the application of the coded synchronizer are presented. The gain of the method may be up to 4 dB.
