Wormsley, K. G. 1970. Response to Duodenal Acidification in Man. II. Effects on the Gastric Secretory Response to Pentagastrin. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 207-215. Infusion of acid into the duodenum of normal subjects and patients with duodenal ulcer resulted in a marked change in the pattern of the gastric secretory response to pentagastrin, compared with the response to pentagastrin alone. Depression of the gastric secretion of acid and pepsin below control levels during the period of acidification was followed by a marked ‘rebound’ increase in secretion, so that there was little or no net change in the output of acid or pepsin during the course of the whole test. A similar change in the pattern of the gastric secretory response to pentagastrin was produced by intravenous infusion of secretin, with a superimposed tendency to stimulation of pepsin secretion.
