Abstract
The psychological mechanisms for the actions of life events are discussed with respect to how stressful life events may have different impacts depending on the age of the individual. The methodology of life event research in the elderly is reviewed, highlighting the problems of using checklists to elicit events. Lastly, the potential for life events to precipitate or exacerbate psychiatric and physical disorders in the elderly is emphasized. Keywords
