Abstract
A method for determining the number of inner shell vacancies associated with unresolved inelastic energy loss spectra is discussed. This consists of using atomic total energy calculations together with the data on total ionization to reproduce the energy losses observed in scattering experiments. The method is applied to existing data for Ar-Ar collisions at various energies. Several features in the data can be interpreted in terms of a molecular orbital model for the collision. Keywords
