Abstract
The optical absorption spectrum of trivalent erbium in single crystals of yttrium arsenate is measured in the range from 15000 to 29000 cm−1 and analysed with a crystal field of 42m symmetry. The values of the five crystal field parameters of the arsenate are compared with those of the isostructural phosphate and vanadate. Differences and similarities are discussed. Keywords
