Abstract
Data were studied from the records of the British Ministry of Pensions, including records of prisoners-of-war of the Japanese, in an attempt to classify cases of liver damage in relation to malnutrition. Dark type (dark hair and eyes) made up 34.8% of all POW studied, but 48.9% of the POW who showed evidence of liver damage. Among 100 cases of cirrhosis there was a proportion of 50% dark and 4% blonds. The possibility is suggested of an inherited abnormality of the liver, of a physiol. rather than anatomical nature, in cases of trophopathic hepatitis, associated with dark hair and eye color. It is emphasised that the findings cannot be comsidered conclusive due to the confusion of terms in descr. coloration and disease diagnoses in the records, but puts them forward as a basis for future investigation.
