Streptococcal infections: observations from a public health laboratory.

Abstract
The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene established a program for rapid streptococcal diagnosis including fluorescent antibody identification of Group A in March, 1961. In a 3-year period approximately 100,000 throat cultures have been received of which 22.7% have been positive for beta hemolytic streptococcus. Of the hemolytic cultures, 90.6% were identified as Group A. A simple and effective agar transport medium has been developed and field tested for shipment of streptococcal cultures through the mail. Age, seasonal, and familial aspects of streptococcal infections have been reviewed from data received in the laboratory. Questionnaires to physicians revealed acute rheumatic fever to be a continuing public health problem.
