Abstract
Male rats were anesthetized with barbiturates and immediately following adrenalectomy-hypophysectomy were subjected to faradic stimulation of the gastrocnemius muscle to lift a 100-g. wt. 5 times per sec. Stimulation was continued until the death of the animal or for 48 hrs. All the rats received opt. amts. of adrenal cortical extract by continuous intraven. injn. One rat of each pair received a partially purified prepn. of corticotropin added to the infusion fluid. Each prepn. of corticotropin enhanced the work output of these animals, although the adrenal glands were not present. One prepn. of corticotropin had a striking extra-adrenal effect upon work in doses as small as 2 [mu]g./ rat/24 hrs. Keywords
