Abstract
Family members were asked to sort a pile of cards. Their discussion was recorded and typed, and typescripts were coded along a number of dimensions. Results appeared consistent with an hypothesis that families of patients with character disorders and of schizophrenics were continually distracted by interpersonal problems arising in their collaborative problem-solving efforts, whereas normal families could place these concerns aside in favor of joint preoccupation with the technical aspects of the problem.
