Abstract
Using a modification of the anaerobic bottle technic of Van Niel the anaerobic growth of purple bacteria was studied. It was shown that the growth factors for aerobic growth sufficed for anaerobic growth and that the presence of these growth factors in yeast extract explains the previously reported need for yeast extract. Redox measurments and their relation to the production of H2 are discussed. Keywords
